In the 1980s and 90s, the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP), saved millions of lives and provoked major societal change with direct action in the streets. Is it time to do it again? Will millions of demonstrators make a difference? And are there other effective strategies?

Ann Northrop is a veteran activist and journalist. After a long career in mainstream news, Northrop quit, went to work as an educator on AIDS and homosexuality to teens, and got deeply involved in ACT UP, most famously getting arrested for a demonstration inside New York’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral. She now combines her journalism and her activism as the co-host of the weekly TV news show “Gay USA.”
